August’s Seasonal Foods
As you know, here at Lucy Bee, we are huge fans of eating the rainbow and enjoying the seasons. By enjoying fresh, seasonal produce, you can enjoy tastier food, boost local economies and help to save the environment. What could be better?
Seasonal foods for August include two of our most beloved foods – raspberries and courgettes. Enjoy!
With their unique shade of pink and their delicious, juicy taste, fresh raspberries are one of the treats of British summertime. Who could possibly resist homemade Raspberry Bakewell Cake, Frozen Yoghurt Squares with Raspberries, or our favourite Raspberry Chipotle Sauce?
Whether you pick them fresh from the garden, or at one of the many grow your own farms across the country, raspberries are our favourite August fruit. Here’s how to make the most of that classic taste of Britain!
When is Raspberry Season?
Thanks to mouth-watering new varieties of raspberry, these juicy berries are now in season for a lot longer – you can enjoy them from early June through to October.
You want to go for the most vibrantly pink berries around (if they’re not pink enough, it will affect flavour) – and the plumper, the better. As a word of warning, raspberries can get squished and damaged when wet, so try to avoid washing or over-washing.
What are the Health Benefits?
Raspberries are jam-packed with health benefits and antioxidants, making them one of the healthiest fruits around. They’re loaded with flu-fighting vitamin C and can decrease damage from free radicals.
Raspberries can also help us to lose weight, and they’ve even been linked with improving type 2 diabetes (they can help to balance blood sugars and improve insulin balance).
If you’re look for ways to spice up your raspberries, then look no further – our Raspberry Chipotle Chilli Sauce is a fantastic way of using these berries and can be used to marinate meats and add flavour to all sorts of dishes!
Once used as an afterthought to Mediterranean-style dishes, courgettes (also known as Zucchini) are now a health blogger favourite, thanks to the ever-popular courgetti. Amazingly versatile (try using it in baking!) and wonderfully healthy, courgettes will always get the Lucy Bee thumbs up.
When is Courgette Season?
Courgettes are best enjoyed during the summer season – think anytime from June through until September. If you’re looking for advice, though, we suggest buying smaller, younger courgettes as they’re full of flavour. You should also aim for firm courgettes with smooth, glossy skins.
What are the Health Benefits?
Courgettes are low in calories and also high in water, which means they’re fantastic for anyone looking to shape up. They also contain plenty of immune-loving vitamin C, potassium and soluble fibre to slow down digestion.
If you fancy giving baking with courgette a go,
then why not try our scrumptious Cherry Chocolate Brownies? They’ll be gone in seconds!
Or this ‘curry’ is a real hit in the Lucy Bee house:
I hope this gives you some inspiration to try some seasonal foods for August!
