Why Warm Water and Lemon?

It’s often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But, what about what we drink before that?

Most of us are likely to reach for that cup of coffee before anything else, neglecting a key rule that we all should live by- “ HYDRATE before you CAFFEINATE”.

Warm water and lemon juice is a great way of doing this. So, I’m going to show you some ways of making this kick-starter drink more exciting and tell you about why it is such a good way to start your day.

When to Drink it

OK, so let’s start with when you should drink this.

On waking, I always oil pull straight away and then head for my glass of warm water with lemon juice. ( Nutritionist Christine Bailey advises that this is the right way round to do this, ie. oil pull as soon as you wake then take your warm water and lemon). My mum read ages ago that you should always drink warm water and lemon from a glass, rather than a mug but I’m not sure why (let me know if you do!)

I mix a glassful of warm water (not hot – apparently hot drinks aren’t good for your throat) with the juice from half a lemon.

Since I do this every day, I find that on the odd occasion that I miss it, my body seems to crave it.

Why is it Such a Great ‘Kick-starter’?

Warm lemon water is great at ‘cleaning out’ your digestive system and removing waste products from your body that have accumulated. This is why I like to have it first thing in the morning because it gets rid of those nasty toxins that have built up from the previous day.

You may be surprised to learn that although lemons are very acidic, when digested they become alkaline, helping to balance the body’s pH levels.

Lemon also contains a fibre called pectin, which serves as an antibacterial – meaning it is ideal for digestive health. When combined with warm water, it can help to eliminate the pathogenic bacteria in the body that cause diseases and infections.

Having a large glass of this is, also, particularly important purely for its hydration purposes. Dehydration can be detrimental for lots of reasons, one of which being that our body cannot perform optimally without the right fuel. For example, the warm water can kick start the gastrointestinal tract, making it perform properly from the start of the day and allowing it to effectively digest your breakfast.

Since our digestion has a knock-on effect to how well our body is nourished and performs, it makes sense to help it achieve its maximum potential.

Of course, the more obvious point of adding lemon to your diet is that lemons are high in vitamin C, which is great for fighting colds and boosting your immune system – especially important with the colder, winter months coming up.

How to Spice Up Traditional Warm Water and Lemon

Ginger

Start with a 250ml glass of warm water.

Adding a tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar is a great way to add an extra boost to your drink. For those of you who cannot stomach a shot of it on its own, this works as an ideal option to mask the strong taste.

Other ingredients to add in any combination are:

  • Small (2cm) piece of fresh ginger, peeled and sliced– good for fighting off colds
  • ¼ tsp. turmeric – contains vitamin B3, calcium and iron
  • 1 tsp. Manuka honey – a natural sweetener
  • A sprinkling of cayenne pepper – contains vitamin B3, iron, magnesium

Since lemon juice is acidic, it may not be the best thing to come into contact with your teeth every day, so, to avoid this, you can try drinking through a straw like I often do.
