How To Rehydrate Your Energetic Child with Coconut Water
Children are naturally energetic. They enjoy playing, running around and interacting with their playmates. It’s always a pleasant treat for parents to see their children being physically active, even though it can be quite tiring.
Still, you must remember that children who get plenty of physical exercise sweat a lot, causing them to lose a huge amount of fluids in their body. Therefore, it is important that you keep your little bundle of energy rehydrated at all times.
The best drink to keep your child optimally hydrated is pure, clean water derived from a natural spring or filtered using an efficient and high-quality water filter system. Unfortunately, many parents are now blinded by advertisements of sports drinks and vitamin-fortified water, leading them to choose these unhealthy drinks instead.
Did you know…..
Sports drinks, processed fruit juice and vitamin water are NOT healthy – in fact, they are loaded with artificial ingredients, chemicals, and preservatives that may only wreak havoc on your and your children’s health.
Here’s a wonderful alternative: give your children fresh coconut water.
Coconut Water Nutrition Facts
A lot of people are now familiar with virgin coconut oil and its uses in the kitchen. However, they do not know that there is another wonderful product that comes from the versatile coconut: coconut water. This is a clear and refreshing liquid made of 95 percent water, and is derived from young green coconuts.
Coconut water is the liquid component of the endosperm (kernel) of the young coconut fruit. As the coconut ages, the liquid solidifies and transforms into firm coconut meat. Coconut water and coconut meat are both nutritious.
One of the many reasons why coconut water is recommended for children is because it has great rehydrating powers. It is rich in electrolytes and natural salts like potassium and magnesium. What’s more, it’s low-calorie and low-sugar, so you don’t have to worry about it affecting your child’s blood sugar levels. In fact, coconut water only contains one-fifth of the sugar found in other fruits.
Coconut water contains an abundance of minerals.
It is rich in:
- Natural vitamins and minerals, especially B vitamins and trace elements like selenium, zinc, sulfur, iodine and manganese.
- Amino acids and other organic acids, enzymes, antioxidants and phytonutrients
- Cytokinins –plant hormones that have anti-cancer, anti-aging, and anti-thrombolytic effects
If your child frequently consumes acidic foods and processed foods, then coconut water is highly recommended for him or her. Coconut water has an alkalizing effect on the human body. This helps correct the cumulative effects of these less-than-optimal foods.
Try These Simple Ways to Enjoy Coconut Water
The best way to enjoy coconut water is to drink it straight from the fruit. Simply slice off the top of the young coconut, punch a straw through the coconut meat, and drink the delicious and slightly-sweet fluid inside. (Look out for a future blog on “How To Open A Coconut).
You can also take out the coconut water and store it for later. However, make sure to refrigerate and consume it within the day. Coconut water spoils easily, especially in hot weather.
If you don’t have access to fresh coconuts you can visit your local supermarket where coconut water is found in the chiller aisle and sold in tetra packs, for easy storage.
Rehydrate with coconut water
Another wonderful way to use coconut water is to add it to your favorite protein or fruit smoothie. Here’s one recipe you can try:
- 100g organic raspberries
- 1 ripe banana
- 120ml coconut water
- 1 dessert spoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon of Manuka honey – optional
- Place all items in a blender and mix
Help your child stay hydrated and optimally healthy during playtime with a cold glass of coconut water. He or she will definitely love to sip this delicious drink.
