Isn’t the Internet a great source of knowledge and how very distracting it is when you read a term you’ve never heard of like “oil pulling.”
Suddenly you’re off and Googling for the definition and finding sites by typing in ‘How to do oil pulling.’ ‘oil pulling definition’ and ‘oil pulling celebrities.’ I’m lying about the last one.
So what is oil pulling?
It’s using oil like a mouthwash by swirling the oil around your mouth for a prolonged period. The idea is to rid your mouth of harmful bacteria and plaque like Streptococcus Mutans and the cause of Gingivitis.
Can you do oil pulling with other oils?
Yes. Traditionally oil pulling was carried out with sesame oil and sunflower oil.
What about using a mouthwash?
Yes you can use a commercial mouthwash. However coconut oil can be 100% organic and virgin, cold-pressed; it’s natural and free from additives.
How to Oil Pull
- Oil pulling is very easy.
- Take up to a tablespoon of coconut oil into your mouth.
- Swish it around for 10 – 20 minutes.
- Spit out (NB into the bin otherwise the oil may block the drains!) and brush your teeth.
The idea is to ‘push’ and ‘pull’ the oil between your teeth. Coconut oil is a solid, unless very hot, so it may take a minute or two for the oil to melt and become liquid. Some people like to do the ‘pulling’ whilst in their morning shower.
