Could Your Deodorant Be a Health Risk?
For most of us, putting on deodorant is part of our daily routine.
You leap up in the morning (OK, so maybe you don’t quite leap), then pour yourself a steaming mug of coffee before hopping in the shower. After that, you probably roll on your deodorant or anti-perspirant and start beautifying yourself ready for your day ahead.
Yet however much putting on deodorant has become part of our beauty regime, it may well come at a cost. More and more often, shop-bought, manufactured deodorants are being linked to health risks such as cancer and even allergies.
Deodorant: The Health Risks
Sounds pretty scary, doesn’t it? Yet we can’t escape the realms of scientists and health experts who are linking deodorant to many diseases.
Terrifyingly, many of these same scientists are starting to believe that breast cancer may well be triggered by our use of deodorants. You see, not only is our underarm very close to breast tissue but many ingredients used in deodorants are estrogenic compounds, including aluminium (which is used to block sweat).
These compounds are as scary as they sound and are not only linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, but they’re also known to trigger some of the same effects as Oestrogen. So, why is this dangerous? Well, oestrogen not only promotes the growth of breast tissue but it also has the ability to stimulate the growth of breast cancer cells 1.
Parabens are also found in many deodorants and anti-perspirants which we throw into our supermarket trolleys without a thought or a care in the world. Yet these same parabens act as hormone disruptors and are also thought to be a possible cause of cancer.
In fact, a 2004 study1 found parabens in 18 out of 20 breast tumours. Meanwhile, scientists found that the age of diagnosis of 437 breast cancer patients tended to be earlier in women who shaved and used deodorants. In fact, the diagnosis was even earlier in people who began doing this before the age of 16.
Although many cancer charities have spoken out against these studies1, saying that there’s no solid evidence to suggest that deodorants do cause cancer, there are many who becoming more and more worried about what they put on their skin.
As if this weren’t enough to convince you to ditch the shop-bought deodorant, there’s also the fact that they’re loaded with skin irritants and allergens. Aluminum, parabens, triclosan, silica, steareth, propylene glycol and talc are just a few of the ingredients that can cause a bad reaction, yet we’re still happily applying our deodorant every single day.
What Can I Use Instead?
Let’s face it, a world without deodorant would be a much smellier, less pleasant place. So, what do we do instead? Do we embrace everything that nature gave us, including sweaty underarms? Or is there a viable, natural alternative?
Of course, eating a clean, healthy diet and drinking plenty of water will help you to cut down on sweat. But sometimes (especially on a hot summer’s day or during a run in the park), that’s not quite enough.

How Do I Use Coconut Oil as a Deodorant?
It’s pretty simple, actually! All you need to do is smear a tiny bit of coconut oil on your finger and rub it on your underarms. It really is as simple as that!
However, if applying our coconut oil alone to your armpits seems a bit daunting, or you’re screwing up your face and thinking, “how on earth can that possibly work?”, then there are plenty of DIY coconut oil deodorant recipes which you can whip up in a flash, such as this one:
Coconut Oil Deodorant Recipe:
6 tbsp. Lucy Bee coconut oil
4 tbsp. bicarbonate of soda
4 tbsp. corn starch
A drop of essential oil (to fragrance) NOTE: care needs to be taken here since you can burn skin if mixing oils and they’re not mixed properly.
1) Mix together the bicarbonate of soda and the corn starch. Mash in the Lucy Bee coconut oil and then mix with your fingers until combined. Add in some essential oils to fragrance, if desired, then store in an old deodorant container, or glass pot for easy use.
