Wish You Were Here? Pre-season Warm Weather Training

Do you wish you were here joining Hull Kingston Rovers RLFC enjoying the sunshine in Camp Clearsky for their pre-season training? Their strength and conditioning coach, Paul Hatton shares their progress with us. It’s a hard life……..

Day 1

7am Breakfast

Today was the first real training day on camp; the boys were raring to go after a day of travelling and a recovery session yesterday.

The A.M. (9am) session was a whole team session that started with a general preparation session, putting the boys through various drills to improve mobility and general movement quality. Once the boys where physically and mentally prepared we split the group into two, group 1 concentrating on core skills while group 2 where taken through a technical wrestle session before swapping activities.

The final 15-20 minutes of the session was a team based skills session, looking at developing our plays and positioning within our structure.

Finally to end the A.M. session the boys were taken through a recovery session, which included, rolling, stretching, Ice Baths and pool recovery.

Pool Session

12.30pm Lunch, This is a tough time for us as conditioners as the boys tend to over indulge on the fine fair that is to be had. We are there on hand with the fat callipers, scales and a litter picker to secretly remove any unwanted items from their plates.

P.M. (2.30pm) session was again a split, with the Backs doing weights while the forwards worked on their individual skills, and then rotating after 45 minutes.

Today was more of an acclimatization day, letting the players get a feel for the surface, weather and generally preparing them for a bigger, higher intensity day tomorrow.

6.30pm Dinner

Day 2

7am Breakfast

Today was our high intensity day, which the boys always dread. Luckily for them the temperature was down with cloudy skies and a little rain.

The A.M. Session followed a similar format to yesterday with the group being split into two, Group 1 with the conditioning staff for a nice short high intensity conditioning session and Group 2 with the coaches for skills before swapping over after 15 minutes. The conditioning session basically followed a modified tabata format, with players placed in their own individual measured grid, they had twenty seconds of hard work trying to hit their targeted metreage and 10 seconds recovery. This continued for 5 minutes, with a 2 minute active recovery before playing a skill game under fatigue.

After a double rotation following the same procedure the boys finished with a 10 minute Team 1 v Team 2 game, which was very competitive as always and team 1 being the victors.

Finally to end the A.M. session the boys were taken through a recovery session, which included, rolling, stretching, Ice Baths and pool recovery. Some of the boys absolutely hate the ice baths so that’s always a challenge. Ha

12.30pm

P.M. (2.30pm) session was again a split, with the Forwards doing weights while the Backs worked on their individual skills, and then rotating after 45 minutes. There was a nice little challenge between two players and one of the conditioners with obviously the conditioner coming out on top.

6.30pm Dinner

7.30pm Roomies Quiz, generally made up of laterally thinking questions and sporting history. In general the boys are thick as two short planks!
