Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way

So the season is over and what a rollercoaster it has been.

Rewind 6 months and I was having a bit of a premature quarter life crisis; forced to contemplate life outside competitive sport.  No way was I done with cycling so I said screw it to western medicine and found alternative approaches to getting myself back on track.

Over the last 6 months my health has improved linearly, so much so I am gutted the season is finished as I am still getting stronger by the day. 

Racing in Ireland

I have just finished a 5 day stage race in Ireland which was an awesome way to end the season.

We raced on the west coast with epic backdrops and the weather was abnormally tropical.

Most of the time the racing was head down/ chewing the stem so you couldn’t take it all in. That’s bike racing, although my mum still asks me whether I looked at the scenery! I put no pressure on myself because this year my only goal has been to get healthy but I was pleased to come away with 8th overall.

By the final stage I was feeling the effects of 5 days racing but nothing a bullet proof double espresso with a teaspoon of Lucy Bee coconut oil couldn’t put right!

What’s a Girl To Do Off Season?

For now the bike will collect dust for a month and I’ll let myself ‘detrain’.

The off season always seems enticing but after a couple of weeks you really miss it. It’s this time of year I start hobbling about as I try and get back into a bit of running to spice things up.  Cyclist’s quads are not made for pounding; needless to say it’s not a pretty sight with chronic DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness) too. This year I am not going to be a hero and kick it off with a 10k run, I am starting with a 1 minute jog, 1 minute walk repeat session (no joke)! 

Yoga is another off season favourite, the key is to stay a little bit active but you have to feel like doing it. It’s also important to try and look like a girl for a month after so much time in lycra with helmet hair!

For now it’s nice to put the bike back in the stable knowing that there is so much to look forward to this winter and next season. In hindsight, I am grateful for how much this year has tested me.  I am really thankful to have been fuelled by Lucy Bee this year, there is a lot of healing power in the humble coconut!
